For this portfolio piece I wanted to create something that was spacey and atmospheric but also modern and moody.  I played around with female vocal samples and pitched them down to make a distorted, second vocal layer to add to the general feeling of the track and mostly used 80's sounding synths to create the melody/harmony.  Despite the synths and samples, the drums are more modern which I think kind of mixes the two to achieve what I was going for.

The bass tracks on the song were layered because I didn't like how the original bass track sounded on its own.  It didn't have the accent/harshness aspect I wanted it to have and when an additional layer was added, I was happy with it.  Like we've learned in class, I mimicked the kick track and edited it from there to ensure it would line up and be cohesive.

For the harmony and melody, I layered both with original synth creations and played in the key of E minor.  Both the harmony and the melody go up an octave in section two and in the third section I switch to 7's.  I used 80s synths for the first layer of each with lots of reverb and in the second layer I used soft pads.

For my recorded audio, I did sort of a hook for the song and just said the first things that came to me when I was listening back.  I used a hint of pitch correction, EQ, compression and reverb to get it sounding good.  For my created synths I went with light, soft pads that would layer on well with the original harmony/melody tracks.  I used ES-P mostly to create the sounds and just basically played with the settings until I got it sounding how I wanted and for the sample I shortened a female vocal clip and moved it down a few octaves until it sounded distorted enough to fit in the song.

As far as processing goes, I made sure the tracks were in the correct order and color coded with the tracks also being named accordingly.  I used time-based effects like EQ and compression on my vocals and routed dynamic processors like reverb and delay on many tracks in the song.  Although its not extremely mixed, all tracks can be heard clearly and it has a rough mix done on it.  Any audible clicks were removed and the track was finalized after that!
